Your Ad Here Nokia 808 PureView pixels versus the iPhone 4S

Steve Litchfield from AAS wanted to illustrate what makes the Nokia 808 PureView so special, in an attempt like Damian Dinning and a few of our own rants, to clarify the misconceptions of Nokia’s achievement merely being 41MP in a phone. I’ll save you guys again from another rant.

The diagram above shows the effective pixel sizes. You’ll note that at 38MP, the pixel sizes are the same as the iPhone 4S. But the magic of PureView is not to take huge images. Look what happens when oversampling and pixel binning tries to process these extra pixels into a ‘super pixel’. The pixel size increases massively, especially useful for low light. It’s even more helpful that the Nokia 808 has a real flash, a xenon flash, not some crud LED.

Nokia 808 PureView is Polycarbonate with Ceramic finish, stainless steel buttons and gorilla glass screen

There was a Q&A with Damian Dinning yesterday and one of the questions is one we couldn’t answer. Was the material polycarbonate? Now dsmobile mentioned when it was just called the N8 successor that it was. But it wasn’t clear during launch. Some said 808 wasn’t given the same nice materials as N9/800. Well…

Damian Dinning confirms:

Q. Is the phone made out of polycarbonate?

A. Yes, but with a ceramic-like finish. Other materials used include stainless steel for the buttons and switches and camera bezel and Gorilla glass for lens protection and for the display

http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/03/01/nokia-pureview-qa-with-damian-dinning/

Other interesting info we may already know but good to hear again from Damian.

Battery still improving:

A. We have not yet finalised battery performance measurements but our expectation that the amount of shots and video you can record in relation to battery life will be similar to the Nokia N8

Why 808 is on Symbian:

Q. Why was this introduced in a Symbian phone and not a Lumia?

A. The technology behind the 808 was a five-year development project. We wanted to bring this technology to the market as soon as we could to start delighting people with a passion for high quality pictures and videos.

Max video recording on 32MB card, highest quality. My 60D is limited to 4GB per clip. Anything beyond that apparently gets called a video camera and has different (more?) taxes that Canon wanted to avoid, so just short clips apparently at 1080p.

Q: What is the longest video clip you can record on a 32Gb memory card with the best possible picture and sound quality?

A: The maximum length single video clip you can record in 1080p @30fps is approximately 27minutes depending on the recorded content. This equates to approximately 150mb per minute of video recorded.

Thanks NeNoRmAl for the tip!

Nokia Windows Phones to hit UK & Europe first

Yep, you read it right, the first Nokia Windows Phones are set to hit the UK and Europe first, according to a Dutch executive over at the Finnish firm Nokia. The new phones along with the new operating system is set to be rolled out towards the end of this year, spelling the start of the Nokia/Microsoft reign as smartphone associates.

Along with the UK, the likes of Germany, Spain, Italy and Netherlands will be on Nokia’s hit list first, according to a statement made from Nokia Europe vice president to the Dutch website All About Phones. It appears Nokia are gambling all that they have and all that they are on Microsoft’s Windows Phone software, which has also caused Nokia to start to discontinue development on its own Symbian and MeeGo operating systems – with that said, Nokia promised to keep the Symbian software updated for years to come.

There has been much scepticism across the globe from Microsoft and Nokia fans alike as to whether this partnership would ever work – some believing it’s going to work out for the smartphone ecosystem yet others believing the whole partnership is flawed and some even believing this is the start of the end of both companies in the smartphone market.

Elop has been doing his rounds on the conference circuit lately bigging up the Windows Phone operating system to anyone and everyone. He says the platform offers much more vision for Nokia to separate itself from other mobile phone manufacturers out there, who are developing and releasing one Android phone after another like its out of fashion.

The Windows Phone does, however, offer an alternative for people who aren’t fans of Android or Apple’s iOS, who are the dominant force in the market at the moment. The Windows Phone interface is charming and elegant with a tile-based interface that has been received exceptionally well and will be part of the basis for the new and upcoming Windows 8 PC software – though let’s just hope the Windows Phone becomes more of a dominant force as its desktop counter-part is – at least for the sake of the smartphone ecosystem.

When release, will you be divulging yourself with a Nokia Windows Phone smartphone, or will you stick with your tried and trusted Blackberry, iOS or Android mobile phone? I personally will definitely see what it has to offer, something I hope will be more than each manufacturer and provider have on their own.

The problem with most wall chargers is that you never know how long to leave your gadget connected to them, unless you actually turn on your gadget and look at the battery status. Well VogDUO’s Green Wall Charger is set to change all of that. This USB wall charger lets you set the charging time to 2, 4, 6 or 8 hours so that it will stop consuming any power when the time is up. This way you’ll know when you’re gadget is done charging and you’ll stop wasting electricity too! There is no word on pricing yet for the PS0517 Green Wall Charger, but it does seem to be iPad and iPhone compatible, it’s able to charge unto 4 devices at once, and it even sports indicator lights.
